Noun Abuse
If only people said what they mean. Yeah, you guessed it; today’s rant is not about mugging. Whilst that is a pretty crappy thing to do, I thought it was duty to bring to the public’s attention a growing problem, that of not saying what you mean. I think it must have started with politicians and their massaging of the facts. I’m pretty sure that businessmen were close to the start as well, with their “not so accurate” product descriptions. But it seems that a watered down form is encroaching upon our lives. Quite often people will just say things that are ambiguous when there is no need to be unclear, clarification is an extra step in the conversation thanks to these people who are poorly equipped to converse. But the main offender has to be the adjective. Sure, adjectives are handy; they make nouns much less dull. I feel sorry for the languages around the world that do not have adjectives, how dull their sentences must be. One could even say they are the spice of life, but that would be going to far. Lets just say they are better than not. Anyway, adjectives. Yes, a few are fine, but there seems to be an increasing trend of using copious adjectives, completely changing the meaning of the noun. The poor noun is being bastardised unwillingly by its adjective oppressors. Too long has this underdog been the victim of adjective overuse. And I for one am willing to stand up to this tirade of noun abuse. Who is with me?

Until now! Woo. So, are you with me on the crusade against the adjective’s tirade of abuse on the poor noun?

I support nouns!

Or worse what is done to nouns, “verbing” them. People use nouns instead of verbs. What hella ticks me off: when people say “minus 5 from…” or “then times x by….” I correct them and they stare at me like some freak! Proper English! Is that too much to ask?

I hate bad grammar. My friends used to get me to check all of their reports because none of them were good at it.

All my friends get me to edit stuff for them. Their logic: if they get the bad side of having their English corrected by me constantly, they should get the good side of a free editor =P
