New Year’s Eve
New Year’s Eve is just another excuse for people to go out and get absolutely drunk. Now it may sound like I am complaining about that, but I’m not, far from it. I like a drink, and I like to go out, but I dislike going out for the sake of it. And that is what New Year’s Eve is really, people going out for the sake of it. People say, “But it’s NEW YEAR’S EVE…!” as if that is meant to be justification in itself. I do normally go out of New Year’s Eve, but I’d be perfectly happy not to, and for some people this makes me weird. It’s expected for me to do something, you have to! You can’t just stay in and relax, that’s boring. I went out Christmas Eve and got rather drunk then, but that doesn’t count because that wasn’t New Year’s Eve! I know a lot of people in the same position as me; they feel pressured into doing something by their friends and invariably have a worse night for it. If they had gone out the night after, when they were more in the mood they would have had a much better time, but the fact that they were forced out by the ‘friends’ because they had to celebrate NYE meant they spent an evening wishing they were at home.
In school it was always the case that elaborate plans had to be made to make your friends jealous, people trying to out do each other, to force themselves to have more fun than other people. The problem comes is that when the night actually comes it is almost guaranteed to be a let down. There’s so much hype, you are expected to have a great night which makes it incredibly difficult to do so.
That combined with the sheer number of people trying to do the same thing, it makes transport hell. All the local pubs are packed, clubs refusing entry. Getting any into the city often proves easy enough, but getting back, especially after 1 or 7 drinks, can be difficult at best. It’s just impractical, everyone deciding to go out the same night, I’d much rather wait a day or two and go out when the traffic is normal, the clubs aren’t packed, and not charging ridiculous amounts for drinks or entry.
This year I was ill so couldn’t actually go out, even though I was in the mood to do something. Hopefully I’ll get to go out this week and have my faux NYE celebrations.
Apologies for the lateness of the comic, I’ve been avoiding my computer as much as possible during the holidays, better late than never. I’ll try harder to get them done on time in future.

I stayed in too, and watched the fireworks on the telly. We got to the point where it was really smokey, and so the camera panned out…at that point me and my dad sniggered happily at the thought of all the people who had spent hours standing there but now couldn’t see anything. Mean perhaps, but funny. Happy New Year!

I agree that sometimes staying in is better than going out but on new years eve there is nothing that is worth staying in for. TV sucks cos it’s all the celebrity crap that I avoid like the plague…if that’s ur thing then I suppose its ok but I prefer being round a mates house having a quiet drink and watching some good films. We’ll always raise a glass to the new year but apart from that we just ignore it.
You are right Mike…there’s just too much hassle.
